Welcome! Since you are new to my site, would you like to subscribe to my RSS feeds? That way you'll never miss any of my interesting articles. Thanks for visiting!

I could not stop wondering about how this Alexa system works when even after getting 757 visitors (increased web traffic) on July 4, 2008, my Alexa graph showed that I had less-to-insignificant traffic, irrespective of June 23 Alexa graph, which showed much more traffic with just 149 visitors! Here is my graph of Alexa web traffic.

My Alexa Data Till July 16, 2008

I immediately started working to find my answers. As I started digging more to this matter, I found it interesting that Alexa web traffic does not actually measure the actual amount of visitors but a mere number of users who visits the site with “Alexa toolbar installed.” I guess that explains my question of inaccurate Alexa graph.

Unfortunately, advertisers and ad networks use this Alexa rank and Alexa web traffic to relate the worth of a link, and hence, Alexa ranking is important to everybody who are considering site monetization.

So, how do we improve our Alexa rank?

Here are my “Top 5 Proven Ways To Improve Your Alexa Rank.”

Top 5 Proven Ways To Boost Your Alexa Ranking

1. Install Alexa Toolbar: Since Alexa actually measures traffic from various users who use Alexa toolbar, doesn’t it make sense that you should also install Alexa toolbar in your browser? Yes, and in fact setting your blog as your homepage and loading it every day does help improve your Alexa rank to some extent. (However, constantly reloading your pages every minute/hour etc. won’t help you further increase your Alexa rank as Alexa counts a unique IP address once a day only).

2. Put Alexa Rank Widget On Your Website: If you put Alexa Rank Widget on your webpage (like above), Alexa can more accurately rank your site as it can collect traffic information of all those visitors as well who do not use the Alexa toolbar!

3. Encourage Others To Use Alexa Toolbar: You will notice an immediately boost in your Alexa ranking immediately if you can encourage your loyal site visitors such as friends, webmasters, etc. to use the Alexa toolbar.

4. Use Alexa Redirects: I have found positive results with Alexa redirects. You can leave a redirected Alexa URL in blog comments, forum signatures, etc. with your site name as anchoring text. Instead of using http://www.enfotainer.com, all you need to do is redirect the webpage using http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?www.enfotainer.com.

You can use this Alexa redirection in internal linking system as well, but be warned that it is said such redirects “may” have a negative impact on building internal and external links. So use it at your own discretion. (Also of note, this redirect will also count a unique IP address once a day so again clicking it multiple times won’t help at all.)

5. Concentrate On Bringing Webmasters Traffic: This might make less sense but my logic is since many webmasters already have Alexa toolbar installed in their browser, if you can anyhow attract webmasters to visit your site, then you’ll really notice a big jump in your Alexa ranking. You can attract more webmasters to visit your site simply by joining webmasters forum or writing contents related to webmasters (such as writing on SEOs and SERPs), etc.

So what do you think of Alexa Ranking? Have you tried increasing your Alexa Rank by any of these methods? And if you tried this, did you notice any increase in your Alexa web traffic?

    Whether you know or not about this Alexa Ranking, when we look at things on a day to day basis, I’ve found that our alexa rank often goes against our traffic trends.

    Sometimes, even on our higher traffic days, our ranking will be lower than on days with less traffic and it is normal as we all know Alexa is not perfect at all.

    I guess I’m lucky to have a good Alexa ranking (under 100,000 at the moment), considering that I still have a quite low traffic.. guess the people who came had alexa toolbar installed on their browser

  3. Manish says:

    @Michael:

    Hmm, let me guess, you must have at least 1000 visitors per day in average considering that your Alexa rank is 93910!

    Thank you for your comment about how terrible my template is. Could you be more specific because I have received many compliments since my friend changed my template. I would appreciate it !

  5. jemi says:

    no, it’s fine ! i actually asked my friend to change the main background just a while ago after reading your comment. i have been wanting to get it replaced because it made me dizzy looking at those red tiny squares on the background.. . just did not have time yet . i appreciate your comment !

    I have wondered the same things. Just didn’t have time to dig into it. Thanks for the article. when I first installed my Alexa widget I had a ranking of over 12million. So I thought it would take forever to ever get that down. But in just a few weeks it has gone down to just a little over 2 million. I don’t get a lot of traffic. Maybe 50 or so on a good day. Today I was starting so good I thought it would be a record day until Entrecard’s system went haywire and my page wasn’t loading and everyone’s ecard widget disappeared.

    Did you just cut and paste this info from somewhere else? I know for sure you got #3 from Google and never tried it yourself. That method hasn’t worked since February 2008. Try one of the links you posted, I twill lead to an error page. #1, #4, and #5 are fine suggestions. #2, installing the widget, does nothing. I’ve tested that myself. You missed another myth too. 6. Install an Adbrite ad so Alexa can track your data better, since Adbrite owns Alexa. I tried that this week, and I had my best week ever visitor wise. Over 900 visitors one day, and over 700 per day average for the week. My alexa ratings were flat as a board. It said 1,500,000 for the week. Alexa sucks, plain and simple. If you do come up with a method that really works, let me know and I will verify it.

    @Turnip:

    You must’ve meant #4, about the alexa redirects. http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?www.enfotainer.com I had checked and verified this as well before I posted this article (i.e., on Jul19); I clearly remember that it was working. I agree that it is not working current and will update you after multiple attempts at various days as I’m sure it had worked as I verified it before posting this article.

    Edit:

    I see now that in fact the Alexa redirects are working on IE 7 but not Firefox…Weird.

    Also @ Turnip:

    “Install an Adbrite ad so Alexa can track your data better, since Adbrite owns Alexa. I tried that this week, and I had my best week ever visitor wise. Over 900 visitors one day, and over 700 per day average for the week.”

    The link between you getting more visitors and installing Adbrite ads doesn’t make sense at all. May be I didn’t perceive it exactly the way you wanted to interpret.

  10. turnip says:

    Ther is no link between installing adbrite and getting visitors, why would there be? The link is that adbrite owns alexa. Each time an adbrite ad loads, adbrite counts the impression and the referrer info, so adbrite has that data. They could share that data with alexa, but they don’t.

    Getting your visitors to install the Alexa toolbar is also a good idea! Or get them to install the Sparky plugin if they’re using FireFox.

  15. illiteratepoet says:

    I have installed the Alexa rank widget on both my blogs, but have done nothing else. My rank is currently 386,313 on my blog I don’t post on but a few times a month. My other blogs rank is a little better. My rank seems to steadily climb every week or so without any persuasion. Its not something I spend a lot of time worrying about.

  16. Manish says:

    @illiteratepoet:

    I guess you got lucky then chap! I’m realizing that Alexa is not even “close” to perfect. I’ll write a follow-up blog regarding this Alexa with evidence and some nice proof! So hold on till then as I’m still collecting data.

    Many thanks in advance for the tips and tricks to get ranked well in Alexa, your right something does not go paralel with visitors on your site and visitors who has alexa toolbars.Recently my alexa rank and jump with improvement 400K within 4 days, I am surprised since I am just doing traffic and SEO by nature, and am looking forward to implement your tips.Yes indeed Alexa now becomes parameter for advertisers to check the site or blog they want to ads, I think this is the industry that we are building also.Since then if we go ranked well within below 100K Alexa Rank, it is obvious our blog will be more valuable in getting bid advertisers, i hope I am right about this one.Good article to be read.Good job
