First of all, let me tell you what Alzheimer’s disease is. Alzheimer’s disease is a common form of dementia characterized by memory lapses, confusion, emotional instability, and progressive loss of mental ability, and the worst part, there is no known cure!
It is estimated that 26.6 million people worldwide were afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in 2006 and this figure has been increasing day by day! Today, Alzheimer disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States, and whether you know or not, someone new is diagnosed of this Alzheimer’s disease every 71 seconds! Yes, that’s pretty scary for a common disease, and how would you feel if your mother stops recognizing you all of a sudden? How would you react if your father forgets who you are a moment after you talk with him? Those would be the time when you have no option but to feel helpless and lost as there is no cure for this disease at all!
But what can we do about it? The answer is create awareness. Yes, we can create awareness among people about Alzheimer’s Association which has been continually working towards raising funds for care and support of those suffering from Alzheimer’s. The association is also organizing Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, which is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support, and research. The walks are for 2 to 3 miles, organized on a weekend morning all over more than 600 different places around the country.
So, let us all participate in this Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk 2008 to join over 200,000 people walking to raise awareness and funds to end Alzheimer’s. By supporting this nation’s largest event, may be we can be a part of the solution rather than being an armchair critic!
